The Challenge
The homeowners of this 2005 Contemporary in Whitehall, PA had a large, flat backyard that was completely underutilized. A small, deteriorating 10x10 wood deck off the back door was the only outdoor living space. They loved to entertain but were limited to cramming guests into the kitchen and dining room.
Their dream was a full outdoor entertainment area: multiple levels for different activities (dining, cooking, lounging), a built-in grill so the cook wouldn't be isolated from guests, and a pergola for shade during Pennsylvania summers. They also wanted something low-maintenance — no annual staining or sealing.
The main challenges were a slight grade change across the yard (which we turned into an advantage with the multi-level design), running a gas line for the built-in grill, and ensuring the structure could handle the weight of a granite-topped kitchen island.
Our Solution
We designed a multi-level deck that works with the yard's natural grade, creating distinct zones for cooking, dining, and relaxing.
Multi-level deck design: main entertaining level (360 sq ft) + lower lounge level (160 sq ft)
Trex Transcend composite decking with 25-year fade & stain warranty
Helical pile foundation system (no concrete footings needed, faster install)
Built-in outdoor kitchen island with gas grill, sink, and mini fridge
Granite countertop on kitchen island (weather-rated, sealed)
Cedar pergola with retractable Sunbrella canopy over dining area
Integrated low-voltage LED lighting: stair risers, post caps, and under-rail
Stainless steel cable railing system for unobstructed views
Gas line extension for built-in grill (from existing home gas supply)
Dedicated 20-amp outdoor electrical circuit with GFCI outlets
Built-in bench seating with hidden storage on lower level
Cost Breakdown
Final project cost: $50,800 (under the $52,000 budget).

“Our backyard went from unused to the center of every family gathering. The outdoor kitchen means I'm grilling right next to our guests, and the lighting makes it magical at night. Best investment we've made.”

Key Takeaways for Homeowners
Composite Decking Pays for Itself
Trex composite costs ~40% more than pressure-treated wood upfront, but requires zero staining, sealing, or replacing. Over 10 years, total cost of ownership is actually lower — and it looks brand new the entire time.
Helical Piles Save Time and Money
Instead of digging and pouring concrete footings (which takes days to cure), helical piles were screwed into the ground in one morning. This saved an entire week off the project timeline.
Outdoor Kitchens Boost ROI Significantly
The outdoor kitchen added $9,500 to the project cost but an estimated $18,000+ to home value. It also made the deck a year-round entertaining space, not just a summer platform.
Low-Voltage LED Lighting Transforms the Space
At just $1,400, the LED lighting package was the smallest line item but had the biggest visual impact. Stair riser lights, post caps, and under-rail strips make the deck usable and stunning after dark.
