Kitchen Remodel Checklist
12 essential steps | By VM Power Construction & Remodeling
Use this checklist to plan your kitchen remodel from start to finish. Based on our experience completing over 1,500 projects across Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
1Planning & Budget
Set your total budget range (include 15-20% contingency)
Tip: Average kitchen remodel in PA costs $25,000-$65,000 depending on scope and finishes.
Define your must-haves vs. nice-to-haves
Tip: Prioritize layout changes and appliances over decorative upgrades — they add the most value.
Research kitchen layout options (L-shape, U-shape, galley, open-concept)
Tip: The 'work triangle' between sink, stove, and fridge should total 12-26 feet for optimal flow.
2Design & Selection
Select cabinet style, material, and finish (stock, semi-custom, or custom)
Tip: Cabinets typically represent 30-35% of your kitchen budget. Custom adds 3-4 weeks to timeline.
Choose countertop material (quartz, granite, butcher block, marble)
Tip: Quartz is the most popular in PA for durability and low maintenance. Budget $50-150/sq ft installed.
Pick appliances and confirm dimensions fit your layout
Tip: Order appliances early — delivery can take 4-8 weeks. Measure cabinet openings before ordering.
Select flooring, backsplash tile, and lighting fixtures
Tip: Bring samples home to see how they look in your kitchen's natural light at different times of day.
3Contractor & Permits
Get 3+ detailed written estimates from licensed contractors
Tip: Verify PA HIC license at attorneygeneral.gov or NJ HIC at njconsumeraffairs.gov.
Check contractor's insurance, references, and recent project photos
Tip: Ask to see 2-3 completed kitchens in person if possible, not just photos.
Review and sign a detailed contract (scope, timeline, payment schedule, warranty)
Tip: Never pay more than 30% upfront. Payments should be tied to completed milestones.
Confirm permit requirements with your local building department
Tip: Most kitchen remodels in PA need permits for electrical, plumbing, and structural changes.
4Preparation & Completion
Set up a temporary kitchen (microwave, coffee maker, disposable plates)
Tip: A typical kitchen remodel takes 4-8 weeks. Plan meals and budget for some takeout.
Schedule final walkthrough and create a punch list
Tip: Walk through every detail: cabinet alignment, grout lines, outlet covers, appliance functions. Write it all down.
